5 Ways to Get Through the Holidays

Whether you’re in eating disorder recovery, struggling with negative body image, or dealing with heightened anxiety, the holidays can make these challenges feel even harder. Even though the holidays are often associated with excitement, connection, and fun, it can be difficult to embrace the spirit of the season when other challenges weigh heavily on us. Whether this is your first time navigating these struggles or a recurrence, one thing is for certain:
You are not alone in this battle.

The overwhelm of the season can leave you unsure of where to begin when it comes to feeling better or being more present. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of five tips to support you during the holidays.

Tip #1: Lean on Your Anchor

Isolation and loneliness often make struggles even harder to bear. Take a moment to think about your support circle—who in your life can you trust to share your challenges with right now? Choose someone you feel comfortable confiding in and let them know that their support would mean the world to you during this time. Chances are, they’ll be more than willing to help when things get tough.

Whether you’re gearing up for a party or facing a difficult moment in the middle of an event, sharing your discomfort with this trusted person can empower you to push through. Having a friend or loved one by your side can make all the difference.

Tip #2: Take Breaks

The holidays can bring added pressure to power through events, even when we’re completely drained. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to push yourself to exhaustion.

If your anxiety feels overwhelming or you’re struggling with discomfort, give yourself permission to take a break. Step outside for fresh air, take an extended restroom break, or call someone who uplifts you. Remember, it’s okay to step away—or even leave early if you need to. Forcing yourself to endure extreme discomfort isn’t necessary.

The fact that you showed up at all is something to be proud of.
You are trying, and that’s what counts most.

Tip #3: Embrace the Exposure

Easier said than done, right? Still, consider this: you’ve been working hard to manage the holidays alongside your personal challenges, and you’re still standing. Take a moment to acknowledge your resilience.

Even if you feel like giving up because it’s all too much, ask yourself: is that really what you want for yourself? You’ve built a toolkit of amazing strategies to help you keep moving forward. Step by step, day by day, you’re building strength that will make future challenges easier to face.

This isn’t about pushing yourself to the point of a panic attack or exhaustion—it’s about recognizing your ability to endure within reasonable limits. Your future self will thank you for the effort you put in now.

Tip #4: Have a Self-Care Strategy

Because you’re pushing yourself in tough ways, it’s essential to have a solid self-care strategy in place. The holidays can be draining, so proactively preparing ways to reduce stress and anxiety is key to maintaining your well-being.

Despite a packed schedule, prioritize some “you time.” Whether it’s journaling in the morning, enjoying a cup of tea with a good book at night, or practicing grounding techniques, these small but powerful habits can help you stay centered. Short meditations, mindful movement, or other calming activities can also be game-changers during this hectic season.

Tip #5: Remember It’s Temporary

The holidays can feel both endless and fleeting, which may add to feelings of overwhelm. But keeping in mind that the season lasts only a few weeks can help put things into perspective.

Using a calendar to visualize the limited time frame can be a helpful reminder. In addition, make boundaries your best friend. Set time limits for gatherings and focus your energy on what truly matters to you. By being intentional about how you spend your time, you can create a more meaningful and manageable holiday experience.

You can do this!
